A new article on Religion Dispatches, Godless America? Say Hello to the 'Apatheists', offers an interpretation of the results of the recently released American Religious Identification Survey (ARIS).

To complicate things even further, the alleged decline of Christianity is largely occurring within mainline denominations, while many of the theologically conservative Evangelical and Pentecostal churches are thriving. If this trend continues, the American society may find itself increasingly polarized between Evangelical Christians and the “nones,” creating a fascinating, albeit potentially explosive, cultural dynamic.

We would also point out that other recent data shows that even theologically conservative Evangelical churches are seeing declines... it's not just the mainline denominations.

We agree that the religious landscape in America is changing rapidly. We hope that diversity will develop in a tolerant, respectful way rather than in contentious, divisive ways.
