1. They have lives outside the church 2. They do not know what you do for a living 3. They have no real idea about what is going on at their own church 4. They do not, as a rule, read as much as you do 5. Entertainment is important to them, especially sports 6. They want to know that attending church is worth something to them 7. They generally do not care about their denomination, though they do care about certain programs that the denomination has foisted on them 8. They need someone to be there for them 9. They demand accountability, both with money and with confidences 10. They are more inclined to believe in people they see in the pulpit and in the hospital than others 11. Some of them cannot believe that you have to go to the bathroom, others believe that you never leave it. 12. They do not want to hear too much about your problems 13. A number of them need to participate in church in order to feel important. Many of these need to make your life more complicated in order to feel important. 14. They do not want to be taken for granted 15. They will stick with you if you are doing good things for their family, and stick you when they think you are not. 16. They are not available for dating, even if you think they are 17. Some of them are a lot better ministers than you are – if you’ll let them be 18. All of them have a ministry 19. They need to experience wonder and meaning-making from their religion. 20. They do not always hear what you say, interpret you in the right way, or respond to you the way you would expect, and God’s pretty much okay with that. As is my way, I'm expecting some argument, or at least augmentation to the list, so please chime in as you can.

I believe that, in point 11, he's saying that some people put clergy up on a pedestal, where they don't have normal human needs and others make them all too-human, where there's just nothing special about a call to serve others.
Or it could be all about the bathroom.... Write comment

I've been having a bit of fun lately, making lists about people who work in the church and other things about church life. Since I can't leave well-enough alone by exposing the not-too-well-hidden aspects of staffs, here is a brief list of 20 things that the minister-types need to understand about lay people:
