apple iphoneSure, if you are a minister you've got a cell phone, but a smart phone may be, well, smarter.

Smart phones are a growing type of mobile device that combines several functions. Typically, they are phones that also allow you to email, access websites, sync your calendar and address book information, take photos, and play music. The Blackberry, Android, and iPhone are a few popular smart phones.

Communication
Think about it, a huge part of ministry is communicating. The ways your church members communicate are many. Some prefer the phone, others email, and others text messages. Trust me, sending a teen a "happy birthday" text message will tickle them a lot more than a corny card. And many busy business people appreciate the courtesy of email, since they can choose when they deal with the message. Smart phones give you the option to use the form of communication that best fits the person or situation.

Data
Ministers, like everyone else these days, are caught in a sea of data. Calendar dates, hospital room numbers, phone numbers, addresses, to do lists, reminders, sermon ideas... the list goes on and on. Most smart phones will sync with the data on your desktop or laptop computer, allowing you to carry up to date info with you without having to double-enter it. Some smart phones (such as the iPhone), allow you to install applications for specific info tasks.

Many smart phones also allow you to play podcasts, which can be a good source of ideas or sermon fodder.

Efficiency
Ministers are busy folk. Places to be, things to do, and unexpected events all along the way. Smart phones allow you to use your time more effectively. For example, while standing in line, or waiting in traffic, it's easy to check and reply to emails. When you return to your office, that's one less thing to do.

Smart phones are dropping in price, and often refurbished models are available for a discount.

I have a new smart phone, the htc touch. It really is great. I got mine in November. During the two hours I waited in the vote line, I was able to check and answer emails, read cnn updates, check the weather for the next hour, etc. That really sold me on them. Mine is also connected to the internet, so I can use google, mapquest, etc. when I need to know a fact or find an address. Cool.
