balmer_randallThe Rev. Dr. Randall Balmer presented the Baptist Joint Committee's annual Walter B. and Kay W. Shurden Lectures on Religious Liberty and Separation of Church and State April 14-15 at Mercer University.

Balmer is a professor of American religious history at Barnard College, Columbia University and rector at St. John's Episcopal Church in Washington, Conn.

His most recent book is a history of religion and the presidency, titled God in the White House: How Faith Shaped the Presidency from John F. Kennedy to George W. Bush.

Balmer gave three presentations on the theme "Pilgrims in a Foreign Land?" The three lectures included: "So Help Me God: Religion and the Presidency since John F. Kennedy"; "Where Have All the Baptists Gone: The Betrayal of an American Institution"; and "Keep the Faith: Reclaiming Christianity from the Religious Right."
